History
G&S began with the partnership of Larry Gordon and Floyd Smith in Pacific Beach, San Diego. The brand dates its founding to 1959. Gordon brought chemistry studies and access to his family's Gordon Plastics business; Smith contributed surfing and shaping experience. Their early work included making a mould and producing polyurethane foam blanks in a garage. The International Surfboard Builders Hall of Fame places their move into a surf shop in winter 1959, separating that milestone from the earlier experiments. Its biography also records Smith taking G&S to Australia in 1965 to open a shop and recruit local surfing talent, before returning to California in 1969.
