Rick's Reef
Guam, Micronesia
Rick's Reef is a right-hand reef break known for fast, hollow barrels over a sharp live coral base. It works best during the winter swell season with north-facing swells and southeast offshore winds, consistently producing short, intense rides. The break performs well around high tide and is widely recognized as one of Guam's most reliable spots, with October particularly noted for consistency. The shallow reef, strong currents that accelerate during large swells, and difficult paddle-out through a narrow channel make it a serious and hazardous break demanding advanced skills. Rick's Reef was named for Rick Value, an early pioneer of Guam's surf scene who began riding the island's dangerously shallow reefs in the 1960s when surfing first took hold there. The spot has a long local history and has hosted the Rick's Reef Classic competition series for years, drawing regional competitors in multiple divisions including surfing, bodyboarding, and stand-up paddling. Professional surfers from Hawaii, Australia, and Japan have held clinics at the break, cementing its status as a significant local hub for competitive and recreational surfing on the island. Access is straightforward from central Guam's Tamuning area, with the break located directly in front of the RIHGA Royal Laguna Guam Resort. The main challenge is the paddle-out itself: entry requires navigating through a narrow channel, and once in the water, surfers face an unforgiving coral reef and strong water movement.
