Cloudbreak

Fiji South, Fiji

Cloudbreak is a long left-hand reef break split into three distinct sections—The Point, The Middle, and Shish Kebabs—each with different character. The Middle and Shish Kebabs offer defined barrel sections where riders can string together hundreds of meters of barrel time on walls of blue water peeling over a razor-sharp coral reef in just four to eight feet of depth. The wave accelerates and becomes increasingly critical as it progresses through the inside, favoring quick positioning and decisive tube riding. It holds swells ranging from two to twenty-plus feet, responding well to southeastern winds and SSW swells during the April-to-October Fijian winter. Low to mid-tide is preferred. The shallow coral bottom presents both its appeal and its primary hazard: wipeouts deposit riders directly onto live reef, and the wave's natural speed and hollow shape leave little margin for error if you miss a barrel. Cloudbreak was stumbled upon by sailor John Ritter in March 1978 and remained a quiet secret until a 1984 SURFER magazine cover shot by Kevin Naughton—showing a surfer launching out of a boat into empty barrels—sparked a rush to Tavarua. The spot hosted its first organized contest in 1995 and gained lasting notoriety during an oversized swell day at the 2012 Volcom Fiji Pro when organizers abandoned the competition in favor of letting elite big-wave surfers paddle out, producing what many consider one of the best tube-riding sessions ever recorded at a reef break. It has since become a regular stop on the WSL Championship Tour calendar. Cloudbreak sits twenty kilometers offshore on Tavarua Reef between Namotu and Tavarua islands and cannot be reached by paddling. Access requires a boat charter; those staying at Tavarua or Namotu resorts receive transfers as part of all-inclusive packages, while visitors from the mainland can arrange charter services through local operators, with the journey taking roughly an hour from Denarau Marina near Nadi. Fly-in access is through Nadi International Airport.
