Cabo Ledo

North Angola, Angola

Cabo Ledo holds a slow-rolling left-hand point break with sandy composition that produces exceptionally long rides, regularly stretching 200 to 300 meters on ordinary days and exceeding 800 meters when conditions align perfectly. The wave breaks most consistently with southwest ground swell and northeast offshore winds, working best during mid to high tide when the sandbank develops smoother walls and rocky sections submerge; low tide works only in smaller swell. The break caters to a range of abilities despite being intermediate overall—the mellow nature of the wave tolerates imprecise technique, though extending long rides demands competency. Rips and strong currents become pronounced with larger swells, and exposed rocks present a hazard at low tide near the point itself. Documented surf activity in Angola dates to at least 1973 when American surfer Randy Rarick passed through the region, though organized modern surfing emerged only after the civil war ended. The sport was formally recognized through the Federação Angolana de Desportos Náuticos in 2012, with the Jagas de Cabo Ledo team dominating early amateur competitions held at the break in 2013 and 2014. Cabo Ledo lies roughly 120 kilometers south of Luanda and is also known as Praia dos Surfistas (Surfers' Beach), situated near a small fishing village. Multiple surf camps and resort lodges operate in the area, and the break remains notably uncrowded compared to established global destinations. The winter months and May through October bring the most consistent southwest swells, with tidal range typically remaining below five feet along this stretch of coast.
