More about Puerto Escondido

Playa Zicatela at Puerto Escondido is a sandbar beach break renowned for producing steep, barreling waves over an exceptionally shallow sandbar. The break performs best on mid to high tides with southwesterly swell (ideally from 200°) paired with northeast offshore winds. Conditions require a minimum of about 6 feet and handle swell up to 20 feet, with routine summer swells reaching 4–8 meters and occasional winter sets exceeding 10 meters. The steepness of the drop combined with the sandbar's sculpting creates one of the world's heaviest beach breaks, generating rapid-fire barrels that exact a toll on equipment and bodies alike.

Surfers began reaching Puerto Escondido's beaches in the 1960s following highway construction, with the town emerging as a destination through the 1970s and 80s as shortboard advancement made big-wave exploration viable. The "Mexican Pipeline" nickname took hold during this era as word spread of Zicatela's consistent, tubular shape. The spot remained under the radar until 2016, when the World Surf League held the first big-wave tour event there, establishing it as a recognized venue for elite competition despite the challenging beach-break conditions.

Puerto Escondido lies on Oaxaca's coast with its own international airport receiving direct flights from Mexico City, Houston, and other hubs, plus connections via Huatulco about 90 minutes south. The town sits roughly five hours from Oaxaca City by road. Accessing Zicatela requires hiking down to the beach; the shore break near the waterline is violent enough to injure swimmers, and rip currents regularly pull even strong swimmers far offshore within minutes. Multiple drowning deaths have occurred both among tourists and experienced surfers, making water awareness essential.
