More about Praia de Itaguaré

Praia de Itaguaré works better on its right side near the rocky shoreline where waves peel with better shape and consistency, particularly during rising tide when conditions improve. The break generates 1 to 2 meter waves during the peak winter months, with southeast and east swells providing the most consistent energy from May onward. Wind from the northwest produces the cleanest conditions. The beach breaks over a combination of sand and rock, and the river mouth at the southern end creates notable current flows that require respect.

Bertioga's surfing culture developed substantially during the 1970s and 80s as São Paulo's dense urban areas pushed surfers toward accessible beaches. Itaguaré has earned recognition as one of the last undeveloped surf destinations in São Paulo state, characterized by its natural, largely unbuilt setting and lower crowds compared to nearby breaks like Riviera. The area has hosted regional surfing festivals with participants across multiple skill levels, though no specific individual surfers or major competitions are uniquely associated with Itaguaré itself.

Located roughly 20 kilometers from Bertioga's center, the beach stretches 3.5 kilometers through a protected environmental reserve with native Atlantic Forest vegetation, positioned between the neighborhoods of São Lourenço and Guaratuba. Access is relatively straightforward, and the semi-deserted nature of the location contrasts sharply with more developed surf spots nearby. The river mouth can present hazards during rising tides, which can both cut off portions of the beach and create unpredictable current patterns.
