More about North Ocean Beach

North Ocean Beach is a powerful, unforgiving beach break where long-period Pacific swells produce punchy, well-defined waves over shifting sand. Best swell direction is west to northwest, amplified by east winds, with waves ranging from waist-high to triple overhead. The break is suited only to advanced and experienced surfers; the combination of powerful surf, rip currents exceeding one and a half meters per second, and heavy shore break demand serious ocean competency. Conditions improve significantly from September through March as offshore winds replace summer's persistent onshore flow. Water temperatures remain cold year-round, averaging 56 degrees Fahrenheit even at the warmest time of year.

North Ocean Beach remained a local secret among Northern California surfers until 2011, when it hosted the Rip Curl Pro Search—the first major professional contest at the break in decades. Gabriel Medina won the event, and the competition drew an estimated 15,000 spectators to watch elite surfers including 11-time world champion Kelly Slater navigate the break's demanding conditions. The event cemented Ocean Beach's reputation as a world-class proving ground for serious surfers.

The break is accessed via free parking lots along the Great Highway, with beach entry through stairs and a paved oceanfront promenade. Point Lobos Avenue from the north or Fulton and Balboa Avenues from the east provide road access. Parking is generally available even on busy days, though lots can fill during optimal conditions and special events. Rip current hazards are persistent and severe due to the beach's 90-degree orientation to the Golden Gate Strait, which funnels tidal flows away from shore at speeds up to eight feet per second.
