More about Mavericks

Mavericks produces towering right-hand waves that routinely exceed 25 feet and can reach 60 feet on major swells. The break requires a northwest swell with extended periodicity arriving at high tide paired with light or offshore winds. The shallow reef—sometimes just 12 feet at low tide—combined with intense backwash creates a wave that stands up abruptly. A rare left-hand option breaks occasionally but with less reliability. The water stays around 50°F year-round, and powerful rip currents complicate positioning. Hazards center on the violent hold-downs from the reef-created turbulence, the shallow impact zone, and the sheer cold after extended time in the water.

Jeff Clark, a Half Moon Bay local, became the first documented surfer to paddle into Mavericks in 1975 at age 17, spending years as a solitary pioneer before others gradually joined the lineup by the early 1990s. Jay Moriarity gained international attention for his extreme drop on a 35-foot wave in December 1994, captured on film and instantly legendary. The first organized competition occurred in 1999. The break has since hosted multiple events under various names—Mavericks Surf Contest, The Jay at Mavericks, Titans of Mavericks, and the Mavericks Big Wave Invitational—attracting elite big-wave riders and resulting in notable tragedies, including the 2011 death of big-wave surfer Sion Milosky from a violent wipeout.

Mavericks sits roughly half a mile offshore from Pillar Point Harbor near Half Moon Bay, about 20 miles south of San Francisco. Access requires a boat launch from Pillar Point, with surfers paddling southward using the rip current before turning toward the break near Mushroom Rock. The spot is typically only rideable from November through March during the Northern Hemisphere winter swell season, when conditions occasionally align for organized competitions.

This location is indexed from a trusted source. Detailed break research is still in progress.
