More about Mancora
Mancora's left-hand point break offers consistent waves suited to intermediate progression, with occasional overhead potential on larger swells. North and south Pacific swells fuel the break best, particularly during the April-to-October period when clean conditions are most reliable; southeast wind complements the shape. The rock-studded bottom requires awareness at low tide, and the break attracts enough surfers during good conditions to create crowding, especially given its concentration as the only tropical warm-water surfing destination in Peru.
The Peru National Surf Circuit began including Mancora as a competitive venue in the late 2000s, and the beach has since hosted multiple circuit events, including stops in recent years (2021, 2023). Beyond formal competition, Mancora functions as an intermediate training ground rather than a famous historical break—it reads as a smaller-scale left-hand point relative to other well-established Peruvian waves further south.
Mancora sits in northwestern Peru's Piura Region near the Ecuador border, roughly 1,200 kilometers north of Lima. The town is most directly reached via Talara Airport, approximately one hour by car, or through Lima via larger airports in Piura or Tumbes with 2–3 hour overland transfers. The Pan-American Highway provides road access from points throughout Peru. Water temperatures range from 17°C in September to 29°C in February—warm enough for minimal or no wetsuit year-round, a thermal anomaly caused by the Equatorial Counter Current that makes Mancora distinct from Peru's cooler southern breaks.
