Itacoatiara is a powerful surf beach in Niterói, with southwest swell and north wind among the reported favorable combinations. The Itacoatiara Pro takes place at the beach. Big-wave events have used the beach for paddle heats and the separate Laje do Shock reef for tow-in heats; that reef is a distinct break, not a hazard on the beach.
