More about Ilha dos Lobos

Ilha dos Lobos breaks over an exposed reef, generating a heavy, powerful left-hand slab wave suitable only for experienced big-wave tow-in surfers working with jet skis. The break responds best to southeast swell combined with west-northwest offshore wind, with autumn and winter providing the most consistent conditions.

The spot gained international attention in the early 2000s largely through the efforts of Torres-based surfer Zeca Scheffer, a local pioneer credited with establishing the tow-in culture at Ilha dos Lobos. However, surfing at the break has been prohibited by Brazilian law due to the island's designation as a protected marine wildlife refuge. The restriction exists because the island serves as a critical breeding ground for sea lions and other marine mammals between July and November.

Located approximately 2 kilometers offshore from Torres, access to the spot requires boat transport and jet skis; however, the legal prohibition means the spot is not currently accessible to surfers. The hazards at the break include the shallow reef itself and the marine wildlife that actively uses the island.
