More about Ilha do Mel

Ilha do Mel has several beach breaks on sand, with the most developed being Praia Grande's Canto da Vó (the left corner), which produces tubular waves and is the most consistent peak in the state of Paraná. Praia de Fora runs the full length of its beach with tubes throughout, with the northern section favoring easterly swells. Both breaks respond well to southeast swell with medium-to-high period; southwest and west winds work best. Wave size typically reaches 2-4 feet on regular days but can exceed 8 feet during solid sessions. Low tide favors hollow sections. Canto da Vó has a reputation for barrel-heavy conditions when swell and wind align. Tides move rapidly across the island and determine where you can safely access the water; some approach paths become impassable at high tide. Crowds can build on good days, particularly around Canto da Vó.

The island's history as a destination for surfers extends back several decades, though specific competitions, notable sessions, or individual surfers with sustained records at Ilha do Mel are difficult to verify from available sources. Local Brazilian surfing authorities recognize the island's beaches among the best in Paraná, suggesting consistent regional value but not major international prominence.

Reach Ilha do Mel via 30-minute ferry from Pontal do Sul to one of two landing piers (Nova Brasília near the lighthouse, or Encantadas on the north end). No motorized transport exists on the island—movement is by foot or bicycle only. The island is a protected state park with 95 percent of its territory reserved for conservation, limiting development and keeping the setting more natural than many Brazilian beach towns.
