More about Guarita
Guarita is a sheltered beachbreak located south of the Torres headland and flanked by rocky outcrops, particularly the Itapeva rocks. The break forms relatively consistent peaks during autumn and winter (May through November) when southeast groundswells combine with offshore winds from the northwest. The wave is protected from most wind directions, making it more rideable than the more exposed reef and jetty breaks nearby in Rio Grande do Sul.
Surfing at Guarita dates back to at least 1955, when Oscar Martins de Lima rode among the first waves documented in the area. Today, a replica of his original board is displayed at the local Surf Memorial museum in Torres, marking the spot's place in early Brazilian surfing history. The beach has developed as a consistent alternative to nearby competitive venues like Praia de Molhes, which hosts the majority of WSL-sanctioned contests and major competitions in the region.
Access is via BR-101 or RS-389, with parking available for a small fee along the beachfront promenade. The rocky headlands and outcrops that create the break's shelter also present hazards for surfers, requiring local knowledge to navigate safely.
