More about FAE

FAE is a left-hand reef break fronted by exposed rock that produces hollow, powerful waves suited only for advanced surfers. The break responds consistently to southwest swell with northeast winds and maintains shape across all tide levels, with wave heights reaching up to nine feet during the peak season. The break is most reliable and coldest of the Salinas-area spots between December and March, particularly in March.

FAE has hosted significant international competition, including a World Surf League event in 2005 and the Corona Salinas Open in 2021—Ecuador's first WSL-sanctioned event in 15 years. The location remains relatively uncrowded despite its quality, likely due to restricted access and the technical demands of the reef.

Access requires passage through the Ecuadorian Air Force Base (FAE stands for Fuerzas Armadas del Ecuador) in Salinas; surfers must present identification and obtain a permit, a process described as straightforward. The confined military setting keeps visitor numbers low and adds a unique access constraint that distinguishes this from public breaks elsewhere on Ecuador's coast.
