More about El Hueco
El Hueco is a barreling A-frame reef break that produces fast, hollow left-hand waves particularly in winter (June is peak). It requires southern swell to work consistently and fires best on low tide rising with south-southeast swells and southeast offshore winds. The wave moves quickly and rewards committed, clean tube riding, but the speed and power make it strictly for advanced surfers with proven barrel experience.
The reef bottom is sharp with exposed rocks and submerged hazards that shift with the tide. Shallow takeoff zones and the requirement to exit at speed add consequence to every wave. Urchins and barnacles line the rock, necessitating reef booties. Strong currents push riders toward the nearby cliff, adding another hazard that demands respect and solid wave knowledge. The break is less consistent than Lobitos's main point breaks and sees relatively few surfers even on prime days.
El Hueco sits in Lobitos within the Piura region of North Peru, part of a tight cluster of seven surf breaks all walkable from each other. Access and accommodation are centered around Lobitos town, which lies roughly 110 kilometers north of Piura city.
