More about Cerro Azul

Cerro Azul is a left-hand point break that peels off a rocky headland into a bay, with a sandy bottom and consistent shape. It works frequently across a wide range of swell sizes, from small waves suitable for beginners to overhead surf, and is most reliable with south swells at low to mid tide—though northerly swells produce rideable waves during the southern hemisphere summer. The break starts working at sand sections near the rocks and can hold hollow sections over subsurface rocky terrain. Hazards include sea urchins and sharp rocks, and the best wind is from the east-northeast. The break works 90% of days annually, making it one of southern Peru's most consistent spots.

The point break was discovered in the early 1960s during the formative era of Peruvian surfing, when explorers and local surfers documented new breaks south of Lima alongside nearby Punta Rocas and Kon Tiki. Cerro Azul has since become established as a popular longboard destination, particularly associated with Peru's national longboard and SUP competitions.

Cerro Azul is a fishing village located about two hours south of Lima in Cañete province, built around a historic British-built pier constructed around 1900 for cotton export. The main break lies to the left of this pier, with the Puerto Viejo area ("old port") south of the pier serving as the primary surf zone and home to holiday rentals and local accommodations. The beach offers reasonably direct access and is not heavily crowded relative to other Peruvian breaks.
