A powerful right-hand reef break producing thick, hollow sections best approached at low to mid tide during southwest swell with east winds. Advanced surfers only. Water temperature around 16°C year-round requires a spring suit, and hazards include the rocky bottom, rip currents, and an often-talented crowded lineup. The break handles 3 to 15 feet and delivers consistent, high-quality waves across southern hemisphere autumn and summer.
The first official World Surfing Championship took place at Punta Rocas in February 1965, drawing 54 competitors from six continents to compete in 10-to-12 foot surf witnessed by roughly 2,000 spectators. Felipe Pomar, a Lima native, won the title at age 22, becoming Peru's and Latin America's first world champion. The site later served as the venue for the 2019 Lima Pan American Games and hosted the 2024 Pan American Surf Games, cementing its role as the continent's premier competitive break.
Located about 40 kilometers south of Lima in Punta Negra district, the Centro de Alto Rendimiento de Surf operates as a dedicated high-performance training facility rather than a casual public break. The site includes a modern complex with viewing capacity for over 1,400 spectators, gym and video analysis rooms, accommodation and dining facilities, and a training pool. The facility was built specifically to host major competitions and remains the Americas' largest dedicated surf center.
