More about Canggu
Canggu is not a single break but a cluster of interconnected reef and beach breaks spread along several kilometers of coast. The main areas—Batu Bolong, Echo Beach, and Berawa—produce fast, hollow waves that work best on mid to high tide, with peak quality arriving on southwest groundswell and northeast offshore wind. The reef is sharp and shallow, and waves often include playful sections for turns and aerials alongside barrel opportunities. Difficulty ranges from beginner-friendly rollers at Batu Bolong to challenging overhead reefs at Echo Beach. Most dangerous to newer surfers are the shallow reefs, strong rip currents, and the consistent crowds that gather across the area, especially during peak months.
Surfing in Canggu dates to the early 1990s when the then-quiet fishing village began hosting international competitions; the break accelerated to popular status during the early 2000s as Bali's beach resort scene expanded. The area has hosted the annual Canggu Surf Community competition regularly, most recently its 15th edition in October 2022, and in 2024 served as the venue for Asia's first-ever international school surfing competition. The spot has become known more for its accessible learning waves and cosmopolitan surfer community than for producing elite competitors or legendary big-wave sessions.
Access is straightforward: Canggu is a developed beach village within easy reach of accommodation and services, making it the most convenient entry point for visiting surfers. The beach sits on the western edge of Bali's isthmus; most waves arrive from April through October, with June to August offering the most consistent swell and shoulder-season (April–May, September–October) providing fewer crowds.
