More about Camboinhas

Camboinhas is a sandy-bottomed beach break in Niterói with a relatively mellow character, generating both left and right breaks that suit beginner and early-intermediate surfers. The most consistent groundswell arrives from the southwest during the Southern Hemisphere winter, with June typically offering the best window of clean, offshore conditions from the northeast. Summer months tend toward smaller, slower waves or flat spells. The break sits in a protected setting compared to nearby, more powerful alternatives like Itacoatiara, though its waters can deteriorate in quality during certain tidal cycles due to circulation patterns around Guanabara Bay.

Rio's organized surf community has roots in the 1940s–50s, when ocean divers and spearfishermen—including figures like Arduíno Colassanti and Jorge Paulo Lemann—pioneered stand-up riding at spots like Arpoador. While Camboinhas has since become an established local break, it occupies a secondary role in the broader city's hierarchy, valued more by beginner progressors than by the competitive scene, which centers on heavier, more consistent spots farther up the coast.

Camboinhas beach sits in Niterói, across Guanabara Bay from Rio proper, with bus access available from downtown Rio via Line 39 or municipal services—roughly a 30–40 minute journey. The beach can experience severe crowding on weekends and summer holidays, and debris accumulation from poor cleaning operations is a documented issue. Early mornings and weekdays offer a more manageable environment for both swimming and surfing.
