More about Cacimba do Padre
Cacimba do Padre is a powerful left-hand beach break on a sandy bottom reinforced by underlying rock formations, breaking away from distinctive twin rock peaks called Dois Irmãos. The wave produces barrel sections that rival any world-class tube ride, particularly between December and March when Atlantic swells funnel energy toward the beach and offshore winds from the northeast groom the face in early morning hours. Waves typically run 4 to 8 feet during peak season, though swells from the north-northwest can push faces beyond 12 feet. The break demands expertise: entrance and exit are complicated by a powerful shore dump and rip current system, with additional hazards including shallow rocks and occasional sharks, making it strictly for advanced surfers.
Cacimba do Padre entered the competitive surfing map by at least 2000, when the Hang Loose Pro Contest first ran waves here. The break acquired the reputation of being the Brazilian equivalent of Pipeline—a comparison grounded in the quality of its barrels rather than geographic proximity. International-level WSL competitions have returned regularly since, including a 2023 event won by Lucas Silveira, where veteran competitor Paulo Moura again took to the lineup more than two decades after his first contest appearance at the same beach.
The beach lies about 3 kilometers from Vila dos Remédios, the main settlement on Fernando do Noronha. Access is by taxi, public minibus (with a 15-minute walk from the Basinha or Mulungu stops), or rental buggy; street parking sits near the beach entrance. The beach is outside the protected marine park boundary, requiring only the standard island entry tax rather than additional conservation fees.
