More about Cabo Blanco
Cabo Blanco is a left-hand reef break in very shallow water that throws hollow, heavily barrelling waves comparable to Hawaii's Pipeline. The wave forms over uneven reef and sand, breaking dangerously close to rocks along the shore. It performs best on low tide, when the barrels are sharpest and most defined, though rising tide can also work. The ideal swell window is northwest to north, paired with offshore winds from the east or east-southeast. The wave runs fast and steep, demanding short boards and expert technique; it is far too challenging for intermediate surfers. Seasonal consistency is limited—the break only reliably fires from November through March, with January offering peak conditions during the southern hemisphere summer.
Sergio Barreda, a four-time Peruvian national champion and pioneering surfboard shaper, discovered Cabo Blanco in 1979 while traveling north toward Mancora. The spot quickly gained attention among expert surfers seeking a serious test; other notable local riders including César Aspíllaga became known for their tube-riding skill there. Billabong hosted annual competitions at the break, which helped establish it as a destination for accomplished surfers. Before becoming known for waves, the area was historically famous as a fishing village and game-fishing haunt.
Cabo Blanco lies roughly 3 kilometers northwest of the town of El Alto in Talara, Piura Region. Access requires reaching El Alto by bus from larger towns, then arranging a pickup truck to descend to the coast. Basic accommodation exists in the village, though many visitors camp directly on the beach. Strong currents generated by shifting sand patterns require careful timing of paddle-outs, particularly at low tide.
