More about Caballeros
Caballeros is a right-hand reef break that develops quality walls and barrels when Southern Hemisphere groundswells between 0.8 and 3 meters arrive with offshore winds from the northeast. It works at all tide stages and is best during the April-September window. The wave produces longer rides compared to some neighboring Punta Hermosa breaks, though the walls form more slowly than steeper, faster reefs in the area. The break sits on a shallow, volcanic rock reef system with uneven bottom features.
The spot earned its name during Peru's 1973 International Surfing Contest, when a competitor suggested "Caballeros" (gentlemen) to match the adjacent left-hand wave called "Señoritas." The naming convention reflected the gender-segregated beach culture of that era. Caballeros gained prominence as modern surfing developed in Peru and has since hosted major international competitions, including the 2010 Billabong ISA World Surfing Games. The introduction of surfboard leashes in the early 1970s made the spot more accessible to explorers, as losing a board to the shallow volcanic bottom had previously been a serious hazard.
Caballeros sits at approximately kilometer 40 of the Panamericana Sur highway, roughly 40 kilometers south of Lima in Punta Hermosa. A paid parking lot serves the beach (roughly 10-20 soles per day). Access is straightforward via the Panamericana Sur heading south, with a clearly marked turnoff that leads to Avenida Huaylas and the beach. The drive takes 45-60 minutes depending on Lima traffic. Sea urchins, sharp rocks, and rips are hazards; booties and a light wetsuit are recommended protection.
