More about Buritaca
Buritaca features two distinct breaks: a river-mouth section with a sand bottom that produces powerful, close-to-shore barrels especially when the river is full, and a northern point break with more consistent, rolling waves. The spot handles small swells on the point while the river mouth breaks better in larger swell. Best conditions arrive with northeast swell and south/offshore wind; the surf is most consistent from November through March and again in July and September, with October frequently delivering prime waves. The strongest currents develop at the river mouth where paddlers can use the river's flow, but rips and fault rocks at the point break present hazards beyond the strong tidal currents common elsewhere.
Buritaca is accessible from Santa Marta by public bus (approximately 50 km northeast) or private car along a coastal road through Bonda and Guachaca. Most visitors arrive via Palomino-bound buses departing from the city center, followed by a 20-25 minute walk or short motorcycle-taxi ride from the main road to the beach itself.
