Ahtony

Bulgaria

Ahtony is a fast, shallow left point break that breaks over sharp rocks and requires precise conditions to come alive. Waves typically run waist to chest height when swell arrives from the east, with offshore protection from west-southwest winds holding the line. The break handles swell from about 1-1.5 meters up to 3+ meters. The tidal conditions don't materially affect the wave shape once it's working. The hazards are significant—beyond the natural rips and undertow, the shallow rocky substrate and buoys marking the point create obstacles that require caution and awareness. Tony Gogov, Bulgaria's pioneering surfboard shaper who came to the sport from snowboarding, discovered and named this spot after himself. The break gained recognition as a competition venue, hosting multiple national surfing championships organized by the Bulgarian Extreme Water Sports Association, including contests in the 2010s. While it hasn't developed a major international profile, it remains one of the more established and recognized points along Bulgaria's Black Sea coast. Ahtopol sits in southeastern Bulgaria near the Turkish border, roughly 70 kilometers south of Burgas. The spot breaks near the town's lighthouse and remains relatively uncrowded even when waves appear. Access involves the small resort town of Ahtopol itself, though the spot's position at an exposed headland means you're working with whatever the Black Sea weather delivers—consistent swell is the limiting factor across the entire region.

Arkutino

Bulgaria

Arkutino breaks on a sandy bottom as short-period, right-breaking sandbar waves best approached with northeasterly or easterly wind. Water conditions vary significantly with the season—autumn and winter bring 2-5ft swell from autumn and winter storm systems tracking across the Black Sea, while water temperatures drop to around 8-10°C by winter, requiring a wetsuit. The spot offers mellow, ordinary power and is well-suited to beginners and longboarders rather than intermediate or advanced surfers. Access is straightforward: the beach sits about 10 km north of Primorsko along the main road toward Sozopol, with a parking area available for a small fee. A short walk of 5 to 15 minutes leads to the water. The beach itself is 1.5 km long and 70 meters wide, with nearby restaurants and a surf school. The broader area is protected as part of the Ropotamo nature reserve, featuring dunes and clear shallow water that accommodates families as well as surfers.

Cental beach

Bulgaria

Harmani

Bulgaria

Harmani is a left-breaking beach break with a sandy bottom near Sozopol in east Bulgaria that does not work very often. The break responds best to east swells combined with northeast offshore winds and functions across all tide levels. The waves peel powerfully over sand, though the break remains uncrowded even when conditions are favorable. The spot benefits from Bulgaria's broader winter swell season, when storms in the northern Black Sea send windswells down the coast. However, I found no specific record of competitions, notable sessions, or particular surfers associated with Harmani itself. Access is straightforward from Sozopol's New Town district, about a kilometre from the town center. The beach is wider and longer than the central beach, making it a practical alternative during peak summer tourist season. Watch for rip currents and undertow typical of Black Sea beach breaks, along with navigational hazards from buoys and other marine infrastructure.

kabakum beach

Bulgaria

Kabakum Beach is a Black Sea surf option near Golden Sands, north of Varna. Surfing is intermittent along this coast, where northeasterly winds can drive rideable waves onto the beaches. A local university guide names Kabakum as an alternative to nearby Sunny Day Beach when conditions shift, so check the forecast and water before choosing a break.

Melnitza

Bulgaria

Shabla

Bulgaria

Shabla is a beach break on Bulgaria's east coast near the town of Shabla. The break accepts swell from the east, works across all tide levels, and prefers west-southwest winds.

Silister

Bulgaria

Sunny Day

Bulgaria

Varvara

Bulgaria

Varvara is an advanced-level left-hand point break near Ahtopol in East Bulgaria. The wave works best with NE swell and SW winds, breaking over a rocky bottom with shallow rocks. Remote location and inconsistent conditions present challenges at this spot.
