More about Boca da Barra

Boca da Barra is a right-hander river mouth break at the meeting of the Contas River and the Atlantic, located just south of Pontal beach in Itacaré. On significant swells the wave peels across sandbars for 1,000 to 2,000 meters into the shallows—among the longest continuous rides available in Brazil. East swell combined with southwest wind produces the cleanest conditions, with autumn months (especially April) offering the most consistent clean swells. The break requires intermediate to advanced skill; the wave holds moderate to steep faces depending on swell size.

The primary hazard is the water itself rather than the wave: violent rip currents emanate from the river mouth, and strong cross currents consistently pull surfers away from the peak. Paddling out requires navigating confusion-prone conditions far offshore, and the sandbars shift. Losing your board here carries serious consequences. The break has hosted regional competitions including Circuito Baiano and Pan American event rounds.

Access is straightforward from Itacaré's town center—most surfers paddle out in approximately 5 to 10 minutes from Concha Beach, which lies at the river mouth in very calm protected water. The spot is visible from town and accessible without technical difficulty, though the break's remote ocean setting and powerful currents make the water approach deceptively casual compared to the conditions waiting offshore.
