More about Bermejo

Bermejo is a left-hand point break that extends for roughly 300 meters down a boulder and sand bottom, creating hollow sections on the steeper outside portions that taper into rippable walls closer to shore. The break performs best on low tide with south-southwest swell and northeast wind, generating waves from waist-high to double overhead. The fast, powerful sections and demanding takeoff make it suited to advanced surfers, and submerged rocks pose a hazard—particularly visibility issues with hidden reef sections at higher tides.

José Orihuela, an engineer, discovered Bermejo in March 1964 while visiting the nearby Paramonga Estate with his family. This find catalyzed broader exploration of Peru's northern coast and led to the eventual discovery of other notable breaks. The spot attracted surfers willing to navigate its remote location and challenging conditions, establishing it as a destination for skilled riders.

Bermejo sits approximately 14 kilometers from Paramonga in Central Peru's desert landscape, making it relatively isolated and uncrowded compared to more accessible Peruvian breaks. Access requires intention and local knowledge, preserving its character as a serious surfer's wave rather than a casual tourist destination.
