More about Baterias

Baterias is a left-hand reef break around a rocky point where the wave narrows as it wraps along the headland. The break works year-round and is more exposed than its neighboring breaks to the north, which makes it heavier and better suited for experienced surfers. Best conditions arrive with southwest groundswell and southeast wind, though conflicting reports exist on the ideal tide state—some sources favor low tide while others indicate mid-to-high tide works well. Shallow rocky outcrops and rocks in the lineup pose hazards, particularly at low tide when the break's shallow character becomes more pronounced and navigation riskier.

Baterias takes its name from the military batteries that historically guarded the coast. The spot became part of Peru's broader Lobitos surfing area, which developed around oil industry settlements in the early 1900s. In January 2018, Peru's National Marine Authority formally protected seven wave breaks in the region, including Baterias, acknowledging the area's significance to surfing culture. The wider Lobitos zone has hosted national-circuit competitions and was historically connected to the funding of Peru's first official World Surfing Championships.

Access requires a 20- to 30-minute walk from the main headland, crossing around the rocky point to reach the break. The spot sits within a tight cluster of alternative breaks—El Hueco, La Frontera, Piscinas, and El Muelle all lie within 2 kilometers, making Baterias a useful option when conditions elsewhere in Lobitos are too small. A dedicated surf camp operates nearby. Winter months, particularly May, bring the most consistent conditions.
