More about Barra de Guaratiba

Barra de Guaratiba is a left-breaking river-mouth wave over sand in Rio's western zone. When conditions align, it produces fast, hollow barrels, though the break is fairly inconsistent and demands timing. It works between 0.9 and 3 meters, with south-southwest swell and northeast wind offering the most reliable combinations. Winter delivers the best consistency, particularly in May; summer months typically see flat spells. The break rewards patience but can become crowded and polluted.

The fishing village of Barra de Guaratiba sits in an ecological reserve between mangroves and rainforest, roughly 41 kilometers southwest of downtown Rio. Access is via the Roberto Burle Marx road, which runs along the coast lined with rustic seafood restaurants. Sharks have been regularly spotted near the river mouth, and dangerous rips require respect and caution.
