More about Barra da Lagoa

Barra da Lagoa is a fairly exposed beach break with waves peaking 1–3 feet on average, breaking both left and right across a sandbar that reforms with tide cycles. The spot works best with east-northeast swell arriving from distant groundswells and west-southwest offshore winds, picking up most in autumn and spring (particularly September). All tidal stages produce rideable waves, though low tide exposes the sand banks more clearly. The small, forgiving wave size and gentle shape make it the primary training ground for beginning surfers around Florianópolis.

The spot holds historical significance in local surf culture. Barra da Lagoa's fishing community hosted Tweet Surfboards, where Paulinho Guinle sold boards and became a hub for the early Santa Catarina surf scene in the 1970s–80s. Second-generation local surfers like Bita Pereira and Roberto Lima emerged around the same time, helping professionalize the sport regionally. The formation of the Santa Catarina Surf Association in 1980 and its later recognition as FECASURF (1987) provided formal competition structure, though Barra da Lagoa itself remains oriented toward instruction rather than high-level competition. The broader island now hosts the ASP World Championship Tour event annually.

Barra da Lagoa sits where a tidal channel drains Lagoa da Conceição into the Atlantic on the island's east coast, about 23 kilometers from central Florianópolis. The traditional fishing village remains the main harbor center for the island, with 50+ active vessels and strong Azorean cultural identity. Buses 360, 362, 363, and 364 run to the beach; parking fills quickly in season, making early arrival or ride-share preferable. Hazards include heavy crowds (particularly on weekends), localism, and the tidal channel's current.
