History
Bing Surfboards grew from Bing Copeland and Rick Stoner's Hermosa Beach shop, which the brand's retrospective dates to fall 1959. Copeland recalled shaping about one board a day, then taking those early shapes to Mike Bright and Sonny Vardeman at Surf Fiberglass in Redondo Beach for glassing. Fellow lifeguards formed much of the first customer base, and a flyer at a local bar provided early advertising. When Stoner chose full-time lifeguarding, Copeland bought his share and replaced the original B.A. logo with the Cat's Eye mark. The same account dates the shop's move to Redondo Beach to summer 1960.
