More about Zippers
Zippers is a right-hand reef break that fires over a mix of sand and cobblestone, producing a fast, hollow wave that races along the inside section in relatively short, zippy lines of 80 to 120 meters per ride. The takeoff is relatively gentle, but the wave accelerates quickly and holds best on low to mid tide. It consistently handles head-high to double overhead during the May-October swell season, with absolute peak conditions arriving during the South Pacific monsoon window from July through September when south swells align with northwest offshore wind.
Zippers was first surfed regularly in the 1970s and gained international attention when it was selected as the venue for the Los Cabos Open of Surf, a WSL-sanctioned professional competition that began in 2013. The wave's consistently powerful swells and technical character made it an obvious choice for elite competition, drawing top-ranked men's and women's surfers. The spot has hosted notable competitors including world-class athletes and remains central to Los Cabos' professional surfing calendar.
Zippers sits just off the main tourist corridor at kilometer 28, a few minutes southwest of downtown San José del Cabo, with visible parking and straightforward access. The Costa Azul Surf Shop sits directly across the highway, and Zipper's and Dante's restaurants operate at beach level. The wave is Cabo's most crowded break, attracting strong intermediate and advanced surfers who are known for being territorial. Beyond the typical reef hazards—shallow cobblestone bottom, sea urchins, and rocks—surfers should account for a strong rip channel that pulls seaward on larger swells.
