More about Wilson Creek Beach
Wilson Creek is a half-mile-long exposed reef and beach break that works best in summer when small, clean wind-generated swells make it manageable for mixed abilities. West-southwest swell and easterly winds are ideal, and the break functions across all tide stages. Winter months, particularly January, see more consistent swell, but larger conditions here can be choppy and closeout-prone. Hazards include a mix of submerged rocks and rip currents; shark presence is documented in the wider Humboldt region.
The break appears to have been surfed for decades as part of the broader Northern California coast, though specific documented history for this particular beach is limited. It remains a local-knowledge spot rather than a destination venue, with minimal crowding.
Wilson Creek is directly accessible off Highway 101 at the Wilson Creek Road intersection in Klamath, about 2.5 miles north of the Trees of Mystery landmark and 7 miles south of Crescent City. Free paved parking sits immediately adjacent to the highway; the beach is part of Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park. Picnic tables and fire rings are available; restrooms are located roughly a mile south at a highway rest stop.
