More about Willow Creek
Willow Creek is a rocky reef break over boulders that produces both left and right peaks, with the left being the more consistent and rewarding of the two. The left-hand wave creates a long, pointed-style ride with typical face sizes of five to seven feet when conditions align, and it can handle double-overhead swells while the rest of Big Sur maxes out. The right break is less reliable and shorter-lived. Best conditions combine a west groundswell with an east-northeast offshore wind hitting around mid to rising tide, conditions most common in January and the broader winter window. The paddle-out involves navigating strong currents, and the exit requires careful navigation through kelp beds and exposed rock. Intermediate to advanced skill is required.
Access is straightforward compared to other Big Sur breaks—a picnic area parking lot sits directly off Highway 1 in the Gorda area, south of Sand Dollar Beach, making it one of the more accessible points on this stretch. The beach itself is small and rocky, backed by the Los Padres National Forest.
