More about Will Rogers State Beach

Will Rogers is a mellow, user-friendly beach break where waves roll in as long, slow A-frame peaks that break in a couple of predictable zones — notably around the rock jetty by lifeguard tower 15 and at the northeastern point of the beach. Typical summer rideable waves run 2 to 3 feet, with occasional winter swells bringing more size; the break favors northwest or southwest swell combined with northeast (offshore) winds to maintain shape, though the waves tend toward mushiness even when conditions align. Winter months, particularly December through February, offer the most consistent conditions, while the breakwater zone can hold shape better in summer despite lower swell. The break suits beginners and intermediate surfers seeking mellow, uncrowded rides, though seasonal high surf and rip currents warrant caution during winter swells.

Will Rogers has been surfed since at least the 1970s and continues to attract regular local sessions, though it lacks documented history of major surfing competitions or championship-level surfers being particularly associated with it — unlike other nearby LA breaks. The beach is best known more broadly for California's Surf Lifesaving Championships, an annual competition of rescue swimmers rather than surfers.

Access is straightforward from Pacific Coast Highway at Temescal Canyon Road in Pacific Palisades; parking is available at multiple lots (though Lot 5 is currently closed for wildfire recovery), with Lot 1 and Lot 3 as reliable alternatives. The beach spans 1.75 miles with full facilities including lifeguards, restrooms, volleyball courts, a bike path, and playground equipment; bus access via route 534 is also available. A sand bottom and gentle slope make entry and paddling out easy for most skill levels.
