More about White Point

White Point is a right-breaking rock point break that peels consistently when south or southeast swells line up with northeast offshore winds. The exposed rocky point creates well-defined wave shape suitable for intermediate surfers, though the rocky bottom and significant hazards—including sharp reef, strong currents, and sea urchins—demand respect and experience. Fall and early winter offer the most reliable conditions, with summer also producing rideable waves from southwest swell directions.

The San Pedro area has supported coastal activity for centuries, originally inhabited by the Tongva people and later visited by Japanese abalone harvesters in the early 1900s. A private hot springs resort operated there from 1917 until earthquake damage closed it in 1933. The state purchased the beach in 1960 and transferred it to LA County in 1995, but little documented surf history for this specific break appears in readily available sources.

Access is at 1801 West Paseo Del Mar below the bluffs separating San Pedro from Rancho Palos Verdes. The beach is predominantly rocky with scattered sand; entry is easiest near high tide west of the parking area. Beyond surfing, the site hosts diving, tidepooling, and hot springs that remain a minor attraction, with facilities including restrooms, showers, and picnic areas.
