More about Westport

Westport comprises three main breaks—The Corner, The Cove, and The Groins—each a hybrid of beach and jetty formations. The Corner is the most forgiving, with steady waves accessible to surfers of all levels and performs best during autumn swells from the west-southwest with northeast offshore winds. The Cove produces faster, more hollow waves with a pronounced shallow-to-deep shelf that makes it break close to shore; its punchy character makes it an intermediate to advanced venue, particularly in winter. The Groins, sheltered and intermediate in character, favors low tide with southerly offshore winds. All three breaks offer both left and right-hand waves, though hazards include fast currents near the jetties (some exceeding 5 knots), rocks and sea urchins requiring surfers to maintain safe distance from structures, and the characteristic rip hazards of any jetty-influenced break. The most severe threat—sneaker sets at the jetties—can catch unaware surfers off guard.

Westport emerged as a destination in the mid-1960s after surfers migrated southward from the Quinault Indian Reservation's Point Grenville breaks. Tom LeCompte began surfing the Westport jetty in 1966, and the area became a regional hub through the 1970s and beyond. Several Washington natives gained prominence—Duane DeSoto, a Spokane-based surfer, won the 2010 ASP World Longboard Championship. The Ricky Young Westport Longboard Classic grew from 54 competitors into a 300-plus event that drew professional riders like Corky Carroll, Wingnut Weaver, Linda Benson, and Gerry Lopez, though it ceased for several decades before recently returning. The Clean Water Classic continues as a regional event drawing surfers from the West Coast, Hawaii, and beyond.

Westhaven State Park provides parking and beach access with ADA facilities; a Washington Discovery Pass is required. The spot works year-round, though the most consistent clean conditions arrive during autumn and winter, with March typically strongest at The Cove and October favoring The Corner. Weekend crowds can swell significantly, especially among Seattle-area visitors.
