More about Westport
Westport (also known as Blues Beach or Chadbourne Gulch) is an exposed beach break featuring peaky tubes that form most predictably near mid-tide, with mushier sections developing at higher water. The break produces both left and right waves and performs best during summer months when west-southwest swell combines with offshore easterly winds. The spot holds some power—even moderate-sized waves carry enough force to catch surfers off guard—and requires knowledge of the tidal patterns to maximize rideable waves.
Rocky outcroppings mark the north end of the beach with a distinctive natural arch formation, creating both hazards and current flows that demand attention. Cold water in the low 50s necessitates thick wetsuits year-round, and rip currents pose additional risks.
Access is straightforward: a short dirt spur leads west from Highway 1 near milepost 75.40, descending to beach level. The area sits within Westport-Union Landing State Beach, roughly 19 miles north of Fort Bragg along the Mendocino County coast.
