More about Wages Creek Beach
Wages Creek Beach is a sandy beach break that responds to northwest swell and works best when paired with southeast winds for clean conditions. Fall typically provides the most reliable combination of swell direction and wind alignment. The break produces mellow, wave patterns suited to intermediate surfers, though exposure to wind can quickly deteriorate the wave face. Cold water and the remote, exposed coastline present the main hazards beyond standard California risks like rip currents and rocks scattered at the beach ends.
The Westport area, where Wages Creek sits, hosted several notable surf competitions during the late 20th century. The Ricky Young Westport Longboard Classic ran annually from 1987 through the early 2000s, growing from 54 competitors to over 300, and attracted established professional surfers including Corky Carroll, Linda Benson, and Gerry Lopez. The Westport Longboard Classic has since been revived, indicating the area maintains a recreational surfing presence despite Mendocino County as a whole not being regarded as a premier surfing destination.
Wages Creek Beach is located at the Westport Beach RV Park & Campground, approximately half a mile north of Westport on Highway 1. The beach is private property and accessible only to campers and RV guests staying at the facility; there is no public day-use access. The campground sits on the wide-open north coast, roughly 19 miles north of Fort Bragg, in a heavily isolated stretch of the Mendocino coastline.
