More about Waddell Creek

Waddell Creek is a broad mix of beach and reef breaks extending several hundred yards along a county line, with left and right-peeling waves over sand and rock ledge. It works best with west or southwest swell and northeast offshore wind on a high tide, handling everything from waist-high summer peelers to double-overhead winter walls. The break lacks the selectivity of point breaks—it's reliable workhorse terrain for intermediate surfers rather than a finicky novelty, and crowds tend to stay light.

Winter, particularly January, produces the most consistent clean waves, though summer and fall can deliver rideable conditions as well. The wave quality is variable and tidal; morning sessions before afternoon winds pick up tend to be cleaner. Rip currents are persistent, and submerged and exposed rocks claim feet and boards. Sharks patrol the area year-round.

Waddell Creek sits approximately 17 miles north of Santa Cruz on Highway 1 at the edge of Big Basin Redwoods State Park, just south of Davenport. A large free parking lot lies immediately off the highway. The beach is accessed directly from the lot, and basic facilities including restrooms are on-site.
