More about Voodoo
Voodoo is a powerful left-hand reef break located 500 metres south of Potters Point on Kurnell Peninsula, best approached on southern groundswells combined with winds from the north-northeast, ideally at low to mid tide. The wave can hold 20 feet during significant south swells and is most active from December through March. The break demands precision timing and expert-level technique, as the shallow reef produces steep, barreling walls that reward committed surfers but punish mistakes with violent wipeouts.
Access requires paddling out through rock-lined channels, where strong rips and the constant threat of being washed toward nearby reefs or Boat Harbour make the exit particularly hazardous during larger swells. The spot has drawn experienced Australian surfers for decades, with local legends like Mark "Occy" Richards and Gary Green known to have surfed its challenging peaks. The reef's fearsome reputation, captured in its cryptic name, stems from the sudden and unpredictable nature of conditions—surfers who persist long enough discover why the spot earned its ominous moniker.
Located within Kamay Botany Bay National Park at Kurnell, Voodoo requires paid park entry. Access from Sydney heads south via the Princes Highway to Captain Cook Drive, then Sir Joseph Banks Drive to Potter Point carpark. Alternatively, cyclists can reach Kurnell via train to Cronulla and a seven-kilometre ride along Eloura Road and Captain Cook Drive. Water entry is gained by swimming out through the gap between large rocks at the end of the ocean pool.
