More about Virgin Creek
Virgin Creek is a compact sandy-bottomed cove that catches swell across a wide size range from small waist-high days up to overhead, generating both rights that peel wedgy into a sand channel and lefts that tend to close out. East to east-southeast winds provide the cleanest conditions offshore, while mid to rising tide produce the best shape. The sandbar setup is fairly forgiving and accessible to surfers of varying levels, with swell windows opening most reliably to westerly and southwesterly directions.
Access requires a walk or bike ride across an old logging haul road that crosses Virgin Creek itself before reaching the beach at the mouth near MacKerricher State Park. The spot sits just north of Fort Bragg's airport. Hazards include rocks within the break zone and documented shark presence in the area, though the beach itself draws surfers regularly enough that isolation is unlikely.
