More about Viana do castelo

Cabedelo Beach, located at the mouth of the Lima River, offers a consistent sandy-bottom break that works across all tidal stages with both left and right-hand waves. The spot ranges from mellow sections near the harbor suitable for beginners to more powerful peaks further along the 3.5-kilometer beach. Waves typically reach 50 to 150 meters in length. Northwest and southwest groundswells combine with northeasterly wind to produce the best conditions, though the break functions well with minimal two-foot swell. Summer months can see extended flat spells, but autumn and spring offer the most reliable waves. Rip currents pose a genuine hazard, and the popular beach attracts crowds.

Organized surfing at Cabedelo began in 1987, making it one of the longer-established European breaks. The town has since developed into a significant hub, hosting several active surf schools and achieving recognition as part of the World Surf Cities Network since 2023. The area receives consistent Atlantic swell year-round typical of Portugal's northern coast.

Cabedelo lies about 60 kilometers north of Porto in the Minho region. Access is straightforward with ample free parking roughly 300 meters from the sand and facilities including showers, changing rooms, toilets, and nearby restaurants. An alternative ferry crossing links the north side of the Lima River to the beach.
