More about Ventura Point
Ventura Point is a long right-point break that peels across a boulder and sand bottom, capable of running over 300 meters when conditions align. Winter swells with northeast wind and low tide produce the most consistent quality, with face sizes ranging from waist-high to triple overhead. The wave suits a wide range of abilities, though it's fundamentally a longboard haven—beginners can find workable sections while experienced surfers chase extended wall time.
The spot has anchored Ventura's surf culture since at least the early 1960s, when surfers like Frank Sentes were already riding here through what was then a largely undeveloped stretch of coast. The 1965 edition of one of California's first professional surf contests drew elite competitors including Mickey Munoz and David Nuuhiwa. The California Street Classic, a longboard competition started in the mid-1980s, has since become one of the oldest continuous amateur contests in the country, held annually each August.
Access is direct from Highway 101 southbound via Ventura Avenue to Figueroa Street, which leads straight to the beach at Surfers Point near Seaside Park. Parking fills quickly at the primary lot, with overflow parking available for a small daily fee. Facilities including restrooms and showers are available at adjacent Promenade Park. The main hazards are the rocky substrate, documented water quality issues, and rip currents that become particularly pronounced during winter swells.
