More about Ventura Overhead

Ventura Overhead is a rare, powerful A-frame reef break that sits roughly a quarter-mile offshore at Emma Wood State Beach. The break produces distinctive long rightside waves that peel across the reef for hundreds of yards with open faces, alongside steep, well-defined lefts that can barrel when swell direction favors them. It's strictly a winter big-wave spot that only comes alive a handful of times per year during January and the surrounding winter months when Northwestern swell exceeds 10 feet, with performance peaking under Northwestern swell paired with offshore Northeast wind.

The spot has deep historical roots in California big-wave surfing. Bob Simmons paddled it solo in the early 1950s, leaving orange peel evidence of his solitary sessions in the dirt lot above the break. Later generations including Tom Curren and the Malloy brothers surfed the Ventura area in the '70s and '80s. The break served as training grounds for a generation of California big-wave explorers, though its scarcity—breaking perhaps once every three years with the right conditions—has kept it a legendary rather than regularly surfed destination.

Getting to Ventura Overhead requires a long, exposed paddle of about 150 yards across deep water over the reef structure. The paddle and the big-wave commitment it represents have been part of the break's character, with access considerations becoming more complex due to ongoing infrastructure work at Emma Wood State Beach. Hazards include powerful rip currents common to big-wave breaks and the general risks of a deep-water reef break far from shore.
