More about Venice Breakwater

Venice Breakwater produces a-frame peaks that split into both left and right rideable sections, breaking over sand. It works best on low tide with northeast to east wind blocking the swell, responding to west-northwest to southwest groundswell. Intermediate to advanced surfers can handle the outer bar peaks on overhead days, while smaller conditions allow beginners in the softer shore sections. The spot is consistently crowded, particularly on weekends and when conditions align.

The breakwater itself dates to 1905 as part of Abbot Kinney's Venice of America development. The spot gained prominence during the 1960s and 70s surf boom and became closely associated with the Dogtown area and early Zephyr/Z-Boys scene in the 1970s. Modern events include the Venice Surf Association's annual Breakwater Open held each October and a Summer Showdown competition that feeds into VSA board rider team selection.

Access is straightforward from the Venice Beach boardwalk. Several public parking lots with over 1200 total spaces serve the area, including the North City lot at Ocean Front Walk and the South City lot near Washington Boulevard. Public transit via Big Blue Bus Rapid 733 reaches the area, and standard ride-share services are available.
