More about Venice Beach

Venice Beach is a sand-bottomed beach break with inconsistent sandbars that works across multiple swell directions, making it accessible to beginners and intermediate surfers. Wave quality depends heavily on sandbar positioning, typically producing best results when gaps open in the bars or when refracted long-period south-southwest swells bend around the offshore Santa Monica Canyon. The break tends toward closeouts due to beach topography, and conditions peak during the October-through-April season, though crowding on weekends is routine given the spot's proximity to the famous boardwalk and its beginner-friendly nature.

Venice became a significant hub in California's post-war surf boom, particularly during the 1960s and 70s when it functioned as both a manufacturing and cultural center for the sport. Velzy established a boardmaking operation here in 1953 in partnership with Harold "Hap" Jacobs, and the beach later spawned the Z-Boys collective (led by Jeff Ho), whose innovative approaches to surfing left a lasting mark on the sport. The U.S. Open of Surfing originated here in 1959 and remains the longest-running professional competition in the sport, reflecting the area's enduring significance to American surfing history.

Getting to Venice Breakwater is straightforward via the Windward area just below the Venice Beach Boardwalk, accessible by car, bike, or public transportation. Parking is plentiful in nearby beach lots and street parking, though costs run high and availability tightens significantly on warm weekends. The immediate waterfront access point is near 2100 Ocean Front Walk, placing the break within easy reach of the boardwalk's infrastructure and commercial services.
