More about Usal Beach
Usal Beach is an exposed reef break at the south end of the Lost Coast, working best during winter months with January offering the most consistent clean waves. West-facing swell and offshore winds from the northeast shape the conditions, though the break remains exposed and variable. Sharks are a noted hazard at the spot.
The spot attracts minimal documented attention in surf history, remaining relatively unknown outside of local surfing circles despite its exposed reef setup. No major competitions, notable surfers, or famous sessions appear prominently associated with the break in readily available sources.
Access to Usal requires commitment: the 6-mile drive from Highway 1 follows a steep, narrow unpaved road that winds through redwoods before descending to the beach, typically requiring high-clearance or 4WD vehicles. This route is generally impassable or inadvisable during the rainy season from October through April. The surrounding Lost Coast area offers hiking and occasional wildlife viewing, and a small campground sits near the beach.
