More about Turners Beach
Turners Beach is a sheltered beach break that produces soft, forgiving waves ideally suited to beginners and early intermediate surfers. The break works best when southeast swells combine with offshore winds from the south-southeast, though it also picks up windswells effectively. Waves typically run chest-high to head-high in the 3–5 foot range on a normal day, and can peel for extended distances across the A-frame shore break, breaking both left and right. The main hazard is the rock formations at the southern end of the beach, where the swell hits harder; the northern end has shallow rock pools. Crowds remain light to moderate for most of the year, particularly outside peak summer holidays, making it a less contested alternative to nearby Main Beach in Yamba. The break shows its most consistent, cleanest conditions during autumn months, especially June, when clean rideable waves appear roughly a quarter of the time.
The beach sits between the Clarence River breakwall to the south and Clarence Head to the north, with the Yamba lighthouse visible on the headland above. It has full amenities including car parking, toilets, and shower facilities, with shops and cafes within easy walking distance. The location is protected from southerly winds, a significant advantage in the regional context. Access is straightforward from the town, and the beach is patrolled during summer months by lifeguards.
