More about Topanga Beach

Topanga is a right-hand point break that works across mixed cobblestone and sand bottom, producing long, consistent rides with both mellow and hollow sections depending on swell size. The break responds best to west and southwest swell in the 2–4 foot range with north-to-northeast offshore winds, functioning adequately across all tide stages though conditions are sharpest on higher tides. The cobblestone bottom creates sharp sections and requires awareness of submerged rocks, particularly at lower water levels, and kelp patches are common seasonally.

Topanga played a significant role in the emergence of Southern California's surf culture during the 1960s and 1970s, when it served as a training ground for many prominent surfers and hosted notable competitions. The spot has maintained its standing as a consistent destination throughout subsequent decades despite periods of development pressure on the surrounding area.

Topanga State Beach sits on Pacific Coast Highway at the Topanga Canyon Boulevard intersection, approximately 18 kilometers north of Santa Monica. The dedicated lot offers 96 spaces with metered parking fees; free street parking is available on PCH outside the lot. Restrooms, showers, and picnic facilities are on-site, and the location is accessible via public transit on Bus 534.
