More about Tills

Tills is a sandy beach break featuring both left and right-hand waves, oriented toward southwestern swell. It handles larger waves and is generally suited for intermediate to advanced surfers rather than beginners. The water stays warm year-round, hovering between 24 and 25°C (75 to 77°F), and the spot is noted for having cleaner conditions and fewer surfers than nearby breaks.

The break sits within Ghana's broader modern surf culture, which took root in the 1980s and 1990s when visiting surfers and Peace Corps volunteers left boards in coastal towns. Ghana itself has a much deeper historical connection to wave-riding — written accounts from the 1640s describe swimmers catching and riding waves along the coast using light boards, making it one of the world's earliest documented surfing cultures.

Access is straightforward: the break is less than five minutes' walk from Tills Beach Resort, located about ninety kilometers west of Accra. The resort has been established since 1995 and remains the only significant accommodation directly at the spot. Rip currents run strong along Ghana's coast and are a hazard to be aware of. Water quality can be a concern due to sewage discharge and local practices affecting coastal areas.
